Ashtanga Yoga

If slow, relaxed yoga is not for you, you should opt for Ashtanga yoga. This vigorous form of yoga will satisfy your desire for athletic exercise while letting you reap the benefits of yoga at the same time. Designed to provide increased flexibility, strength, endurance, and balance with a series of synchronized movements and breathing, Ashtanga is a dynamic form of yoga. The word “Ashtanga” means “eight limbs” in Sanskrit, referring to the eight limbs of yoga in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Interpreted by Krishnamacharya and Sri K. Pattabhi Jois from an ancient text called the Yoga Korunta, the Ashtanga method of asana practice describes an extraordinary system of Hatha yoga, developed by a Rishi named Vamana. Consisting of a series of poses performed in a flowing Vinyasa style, Ashtanga yoga focuses on enhancing the well being of its practitioners. In the practice of Ashtanga yoga, there are six different series of poses through which a student has to go through according to his or her own pace and ability.

Yoga Chikitsa (or yoga therapy) is the first series which begins with sun salutations, followed by a set of 75 poses that take about 2 hours to complete. The Chikitsa series includes standing poses, seated poses, inversions, and backbends for relaxation. This series is aimed at building strength, flexibility and stamina while realigning the spine and detoxifying the body. The second set is the Nadi Shodana. It means nervous system purification and works towards cleansing and strengthening the nervous system. The students are exposed to this intermediate series only after mastering the Chikitsa series. The movements in Nadi Shodana similar to those in the first series but with added poses and variations, to enhance nervous system function and ability. The remaining four are subdivisions of the Sthira Bhaga, meaning divine stability. Emphasizing difficult arm balances, these are only for the highly advanced students. Each series concludes with a group of cooling-down, final positions which precede relaxation.

It can take years for students to master each of these phases. As yoga is a dynamic process of consistantly improving your health, time will be required to reap all of the benefits. If properly practiced, Ashtanga yoga can be of great benefit to your well-being, and worth the time and energy you invest into it.

Svaroopa Yoga

If you believe that yoga should go beyond simply exercising, you should opt for Svaroopa yoga. Svaroopa yoga is a unique consciousness-oriented form of yoga that promotes healing and transformation. A yoga type that focuses on releasing tensions settled in the deepest layers of the body, which are the layers of muscles wrapped around your spine, Svaroopa is indeed a unique approach to well-being. This healing and restorative style of Hatha yoga helps you reach within yourself and access your own being consciously via a series of familiar yoga poses that are performed with special emphasis on the opening of the spine or spinal release. The foundational principles of asana, anatomy, and yoga philosophy are integrated into each of the yoga poses, making them all the more effective.

This particular form of yoga has 120 different poses, 30 to 50 of which will be taught to you in normal yoga classes. Svaroopa yoga also includes alignments and adjustments. You will find a total of 384 of them included in this form of yoga. With the highest emphasis on proper alignment, the practice of Svaroopa yoga makes use of props and adjustments to ensure that the body opens up gently but properly. Each Svaroopa yoga class begins with Shavasana, a resting pose aimed at promoting relaxation and awareness. Then comes the Marker pose to help you understand the core releases along your spine. It is the same pose that the yoga classes end with as well.

In Svaroopa yoga, there is a series of poses with special emphasis on the spine that guides you from your tailbone to the top to help you release tensions situated in the spine. With proper support for your body, you will be able to create core openings where your body is the tightest. Svaroopa yoga places special importance on the decompression of the spine rather than stretching it. Other yoga styles require you to focus on peripheral stretching, making your spinal muscles tighter, stabilizing your hyper-flexible joints. Svaroopa yoga is all about releasing the tightness or the tension located in the muscles of your spine. As you progress through this yoga style, physical benefits are guaranteed, but a blissful feeling that comes from within is something that is going to change the way you perceive your life.

Ananda Yoga

A few years ago, remaining physically healthy was the prime concern for people.  But as times changed, so did people’s opinions about their health and well being.  As the world started getting more and more crowded, with stress a constant factor in people’s life, they started looking for a practice that could keep them physically, mentally and spiritually healthy; a practice that would help them find peace within.  They turned to the old ways, namely yoga.   In practice for over thousands of years, this particular practice comes from the east and has just relatively recently found its way into the west.  This approach to well-being is very effective; it keeps the practitioners healthy, physically, mentally and emotionally and it has even been found to cure several ailments.  Yoga has many different types, among them, a type knownn as Ananda.  This yoga type arises from the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the famed Autobiography of a Yogi, and the first great yoga master to make the west his home.  His teachings, however, were brought into shape and were made into a definite system of practice by his close and direct disciple, Swami Kriyananda.

Ananda yoga aims at raising your level of consciousness via the natural effects of the yoga postures.  Designed especially to harmonize the practitioners’ mind, body and soul, this yoga type has the original spiritual essence.  It includes a series of techniques like Asana (also called yoga postures), pranayama (special breathing and energy-control techniques), meditation techniques and applied yoga philosophy.  Gentle for the beginners, Ananda yoga becomes more challenging with time and experience.  Never aggressive or aerobic, the practice of Ananda yoga emphasizes on safety and correct alignment while believing in maintaining constant relaxation even amid efforts.  This, in fact, can be made the guiding principle of one’s life as well–finding relaxation even in the midst of life’s struggles.

There are two unique aspects that make Ananda yoga stand out; energization exercises and asana affirmations.  A series of 39 special energy-control techniques, the energization exercises help the practitioner increase, focus and control his life force. Likewise, asana affirmations are silently practiced with yoga postures to increase their impact on the practitioners’ consciousness, involving the mind directly into the practice.
